Fuel Management and Checking the Oil Level During Extended Power Outages.

You may not want to run your generator 24 hours a day during an extended utility power outage.  Fuel management performed correctly by taking the correct steps can save you money however you should not just shut the generator off, there is a procedure.

Utility power outages can last for days.  Manufacturers recommend that checking the oil levels for the generator engines during these extended outage should occur every two to three days.  There is a procedure which should be followed for checking the oil level during the extended power outages.

If you decide to turn the generator off during a utility power outage the following steps should be followed.

  1. Locate the circuit breaker inside the generator usually insided the control panel and turn the breaker off.  This disconnects the load from the generator, all power to the structure being served will go off.
  2. Let the generator engine continue to run for 5 minutes and then set the generator functions to off using the selector switch of the generator's controller.
  3. If you have turned the generator off to check the oil level, wait 10 minutes before checking.  If the oil level is low, refill with the oil type recommended by the manufacturer, be careful not to overfill.
  4. When you are ready to restart the generator, switch the selector switch of the controller to AUTO and wait for the generator to start.  After the engine has started and is running, wait 30 seconds to allow the engine to stabilize and then turn the generator circuit breaker back on.

Remote Monitoring for Kohler Generators

Remote monitoring with an annual contract is becoming the choice for a lot of our service contract customers.  The 24/7 attention to each of thousands of generators combined with correct and comprehensive annual service allows us to provide failure rates of less than 1%.

The Kohler approach to monitoring is to connect directly to the structure ehternet netork thru the router to enable connection between the generator controller and the Kohler server's so that notifications can be sent to the end user or the company taking care of the generator.

If the end user is away from home, without the monitoring package, a power loss could occur and as with any mechanical product, a fault could occur and there is no one to notify the company taking care of the system.  This can result in several type loss scenarios such as food, water damage, etc.; the monitoring can put an end to these type loss scenarios.
